Part One: The self-directed e-learning module is designed to provide you a foundation built on theory and solid design principles prior to the virtual workshop.

Part Two: On November 7 & 8 (10:00 am ET to 4:00 pm ET) , you will delve deeper into the open digital badging ecosystem through the instructor-led, virtual workshop that helps you design and develop an operational badging program within your organization.

Part Three: On December 5 (10:00 am ET to 2 pm ET), you will showcase your open digital badge and detailed plans for a badging program. In this final half-day session, you will have 15 minutes to showcase your finished badge and present you plans for further program development and to see other participants' progress. 

At the end of this session, you will be assessed on proficiency based on instructor evaluation of the open digital badge and proposed program.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Define a badging platform and recognize its purpose
  • Explain the need for unique evidence to support the purpose of the badge
  • Recognize how curricular design allows portability and shareability across multiple media
  • Outline how stackability contributes to a digital portfolio of accomplishments and learning recognition
  • Identify how to work with metadata to streamline some processes while producing evidence-rich credentials
  • Develop a prototype badge based on IACET’s ODB Taxonomy
  • Design an open digital badge strategy and advocacy plan for program development

James Willis

Dr. James E. Willis, III was introduced to open digital badges at Purdue University when he worked as an Educational Assessment Specialist in Information Technology. He later worked on a MacArthur Foundation grant as a Research Associate and Project Coordinator for Open Digital Badges in Higher Education in the Center for Research on Learning and Technology at Indiana University. Since 2016, James has worked as an educational consultant with the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) where he wrote the Badging Standard, supplementary materials, and educational materials for the Open Digital Badges Experience. During his time at IACET, James also coordinated with the Information Technology Certification Council (ITCC) to produce a Badging Taxonomy. James has published on open digital badges in journals like the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy and EDUCAUSE Review, and in books like Foundations of Digital Badges and Microcredentials (Springer) and Digital Badges in Education: Trends, Issues, and Cases (Routledge). He has been an invited speaker on open digital badges for diverse audiences including the Council for Engineering and Scientific Society Executives, STEM Education in Virtual Words Workshop Series, the 2016 Digital Badge Summit, and the Open edX Technical Conference at MIT. He was also a co-leader for the 2ndInternational Workshop on Open Digital Badges in Education at the Learning Analytics and Knowledge conference. James holds a PhD from King’s College London.

Success in a learning event is dependent on active participation and engagement by the attendee throughout the course. In order to earn a course completion certificate and digital badge for any IACET learning event, attendees are required to fully participate in the training activities, lectures, and discussion. This applies to those attending in-person and remotely. Participation is defined as greater than 90% attendance of the scheduled course time and active engagement verified by the facilitator. Remote participation requires a working webcam and microphone; the webcam must be activated throughout the learning event.

Full refunds are available for cancelations with written notification to info@iacet.org within 20 days of the event. Refunds of 50% of the registration are available within 10 days of the event. No refund is available 5 days prior to the event due to prepaid expenses on behalf of the participant.
