[Reston, Virginia] The STAPLER Act is legislation supported by IACET and sponsored by Rep. Don Beyer of Virginia. The proposed act would allow qualifying individuals providing adult education the same above-the-line deduction as is allowed for expenses of elementary and secondary school teachers. "Current law disallows continuing and adult education teachers from claiming tax deductions for classroom supplies, even though such deductions are allowed for K-12 teachers," Representative Beyer said. If passed, this law would provide some relief for some instructors' expenses currently paid out-of-pocket.

"IACET has been in support of the bill from its early stages of development and is pleased with the effort Representative Beyer has made on the issue," said IACET CEO, Joe McClary. IACET research shows its members are in strong support of the act and look forward to the support it would lend to adult educators. IACET was also successful in garnering support from American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE).
